Significance of the office of the vice president (by Manuel)
In the constitution of the United States no high significance was attached to the office of the vice president. It concerns primarily a representation office to which a few functions follow.
Principal purpose of the vice president's office is the succession of the president. Besides the vice president has the chairmanship about the senate, but, he has only a tie-break vote. According to the constitution, the vice president can be the president of the senate and lead the debates.He takes this position only if there are ceremonial things, as for example the speech on the situation of the nation, or his vote is used in the event of a tied vote.
The first vice president, John Adams, has called the office the most meaningless one which was one day invented by people. In contrast to this there is the saying the vice president office is removed only one heartbeat from the oval (office of the actual president)as can be seen in the case of J.F.Kennedy who was killed in 1963 and the folloed by L.B.Johnson.

The following facts about Joe Biden are true
Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November, 1942. He completed the catholic Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware in 1961 and graduated on the University of Delaware in history and political science in 1965. He is married to Jill Tracy Jacobs, his second wife. His first wife and his third child died in a car crash.
Biden became senator of Delaware for the first time in 1973 and from that time until now he had won 5 votes. On August the 23th 2008 he was appointed Vice President by Barack Obama.
His aims as Vice President are generally Obamas aims, too.
Biden is very popular for his speeches, which are excellently articulated and very emotional, but also very long. Being much older and experienced than Obama, he is very important as a consultant.

Facts about Sarah Palin (by Patrick)
Sarah Palin is the Republican vice president nominee. She was born on February 11, 1964 in Idaho. Her family moved to Alaska a few years later. She was elected twice to the city council of Wasilla. In 2006 she became the first woman governor of Alaska.
On August 29, 2008, she was nominated as running mate for John McCain in the presidential elections. This was a big surprise because nobody thought that she would be a good candidate. But it was a really good movement from McCain because she is young and a woman. This was good for his campaign because the younger voters moved to his party and they hoped that some of the supporters of Hillary Clinton would vote for the Republicans.
But Sarah Palin had some skandals, too. Her 17 years old daughter is pregnant which brought Palin a lot of bad publicity. As mayor of Wasilla she secured almost $27 million in federal appropriations for a rail link and other transportation things and Wasilla just has 6700 inhabitans. She was also for the 'Bridge to Nowhere' which should had cost $233 million to connect an island of just 50 inhabitants.
